Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' current "Thrift Shop" has launched them into the stratosphere, but it's another one of their tracks from The Heist that has them coming under fire for selling out. "Wing$" is an anti-consumerism song criticizing Nike for creating a culture that has produced $200 pairs of shoes with lyrics like "Phil Knight tricked us all," and "Will I stand for change or stay in my box? These Nike's helped to define me now I'm trying to take mine off."
The problem? Macklemore and Ryan Lewis decided to do a promo for the NBA All-Star weekend using "Wing$" and during the process removed any and all lyrics that might be critical of the expensive shoe culture the NBA undoubtedly contributed to.
Unlikely that we'll ever get an explanation, but it does make you wonder if he agreed to this edit or if perhaps the NBA took certain liberties. Meanwhile, he still independently made a #1 hit and that may give him some leeway with fans that believe he sold out here.
